Amphitheater in Danehy Park ($350,000)

Danehy Park

Build an amphitheater in Danehy Park for outdoor performances, music, stories, and other cultural events that the whole community can enjoy.

A small amphitheater in Danehy Park would be environmentally-friendly and great for the City. This project is necessary because the neighborhood needs a place for cultural events, music, and other performances. It will benefit not only the nearby neighborhoods of North and West Cambridge, but the whole City. This project would be an excellent use of the City's money.

This proposal’s costs would include clearing and grubbing, excavation, environmental remediation, four rows of benches, and an accessible path from the nearest walkway to the front row of benches and the performance area. The proposal assumes a location with a natural tier, eliminating costs for grading.

I guess I don’t agree that this would benefit only one neighborhood…I imagine an amphitheater as a resource that people from all over Cambridge would use. I’m imagining youth & community groups as well as professional groups putting on plays and concerts in the park, and people from all over Cambridge attending them.

It is too bad that Danehy Park is not more centrally located, but I’m guessing it’s our only park that is suitably large for an amphitheater (and also large enough to provide enough quiet that people can enjoy the performances.)

Full disclosure: I am a volunteer delegate with the PB project (I worked on the Environment, Health, & Safety Committee), but I was not in the committee that developed this proposal. This is just my individual opinion.

Interesting idea, but Ohio Meister brings up a valid concern. Perhaps 70 percent of the funds should not go to one neighborhood.

I don’t think 70% of the funds should go to a project that only benefits one neighborhood.

Cool! The last few summers, there have been Shakespeare performances in Danehy Park, and I’m guessing that an amphitheater would probably inspire even more performances.

This is innovative thinking and creates a resource not found anywhere else in Cambridge. Hopefully improved pedestrian access would be part of this since residents on the North side are blocked by railroad tracks and fences from easy entry into Danehy.
